So now that you know, you're probably wondering "How do I make a hidden folder on my Mac?" Well, for a folder to be hidden on your Mac, the name of the folder must start with a period. Unfortunately, you will not be able to create a folder starting with a period without using a workaround.
Terminal App
Using the Terminal app found by clicking on Applications > Utilities > Terminal
You will see a window that looks something like this.
In this box type in mkdir .hidden
This tells your Mac to make a directory called "hidden" in your home folder. You can call the folder anything you would like as long as there is a period in the front.
When viewing your home folder with Finder you'll notice no newly added folders, but if you click on Go > Go to Folder or by pressing Command-Shift-G. When you type in ~/.hidden and press enter your hidden files will appear. You can now use this folder to store just about anything you'd like including x-rated media. Nothing saved in this folder will show up in the spotlight search.
If the time has come when you're ready to permanently delete this folder, just open Terminal again and type in rm -r .hidden
That command tells your Mac to remove the folder "hidden".
Clearing your list of recently opened items
Even with your content hidden, you should always clear your recent history of what files have been accessed. In OS X 10.7 Lion, when you right-click an icon on the dock, it shows you a list of the "most recent" items for that application. To clear this entire list, Open the application in question, Go to the menu bar, File > Open Recent > Clear Menu and Restart the application.
